Anti-Discrimination Laws Related to Employment

Your supervisor has placed you in charge of hiring a new, full-time administrative assistant for your department.

  • Prepare an advertisement for that position that complies with federal law. This advertisement must be detailed. The minimum length of your job description must be 300 words (approximately three-fourths of a page). You can make up the job details but must include the following:
  • A job description
  • A description of the job duties
  • A description of the minimum qualifications
  • Prepare 10 illegal questions that must not be asked. For each question, be sure to justify your reasoning.
  • Prepare 10 legal questions that may be asked during the interview. For each question, be sure to justify each question.

Submit your three- to five-page paper (not including the title and reference pages). Your paper must be formatted to APA style as outlined in the approved APA style guide and must cite at least three scholarly sources in addition to the textbook.

Dear Class,

I wanted to give you a few suggestions for the upcoming Week 5 Written Assignment on Anti-Discrimination Laws, due on Monday, March 19, 2018.

I always encourage students to review not only the Faculty Expectations (which provides detailed expectations on assignments, both papers and posts) but also the Instructor Guidance links. The Instructor Guidance links always include more information, applicable resources and hopefully, clarity on your course concepts that you are studying for each week. I also try to break down the assignments more and provide you with further information on the assignment expectations.

One of my main suggestions for Week 5’s paper is this: I strongly encourage you to review the Week 5 Instructor Guidance link. Some of you have not yet accessed these links and the section on the Week 5 Written Assignment not only provides further resources but provides very specific information in breaking down what the written assignment means.

An example would be this: The Week 5 written assignment states that you “Prepare[s] a complete advertisement for a position that complies with federal law. Include[s] clearly detailed and accurate descriptions of the job, job duties, and minimum qualifications” (Ashford’s Week 5 Written Assignment Grading Rubric).

I have had students just cut and paste ads that they find online and submit that as one that they have written. This will not suffice. You need to write your own ad. If you find a section that you want to include that has been used in other ads, make sure you properly format the quote and cite the source. But, your ad is one that you prepare/write, not just copy from another source.

Many ads will include the wording “[this company] does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, age, ethnicity, religion, national origin, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information, sex, marital status, disability, or status as a U.S. veteran” (Iowa State University, n.d., para. 1).

Using those words is fine, but since this is an academic paper, you still have to provide credit for quotes and cite your sources.

Please note that the job you are writing is an ad is for a full-time administrative assistant. It can be for any department in a business but you don’t choose the job. I’ve had students write ads for interior designers, engineers, painters, zoo keepers (yes, really), exotic dancers (surprisingly so), pilots, bicycle delivery persons (really, again), teachers and nurses – this is not what the assignment states, so make sure you write an ad for an administrative assistant!

Questions

For the illegal and legal questions, this is where you can be creative and prepare/write your own examples. If you just copy from a source their examples of illegal and legal questions, then you don’t strongly demonstrate you understand the concepts and can apply them. So, make sure you are writing your own bad and good questions! Just copying questions from other sources will not meet the stated requirements for this assignment – write your own!

Remember: you have to explain for each question why it is illegal and why it is legal. Just providing a list of questions, with no explanation, will not suffice for this assignment. A ‘lump’ explanation for a large group of questions will also not be satisfactory – make sure you address each question.

I hope this helps. And, once again, please review the Instructor Guidance for Week 5 and the Announcements for Week 5, too. These are designed to provide assistance within the course.

Sincerely,
