Teen suicide or attempted suicide is a growing problem.  â€œIt is the third leading cause of death for young people ages 15 to 24 (American Psychological Association, 2016).”  According to APA (2016), nearly 300,000 teens receive medical attention for an attempted suicide and 1,700 teens die as a result of suicide every year. There are many contributing factors that may make a teen feel suicidal, for example: psychiatric disorders, conflict with friends or family members, sexual abuse or violence, alcohol or drug addiction, medical issues/pregnancy/STD’s, bullying, sexual orientation uncertainty, being adopted, exposure to suicide (Mayo Clinic, 2016).

In addition to the above risk factors, there are several signs to look for to help prevent a suicide attempt.  Some of those signs are talking about dying, change in personality or behavior, change in sleep patterns , change in eating habits, low self esteem, and feelings of no hope for the future (APA, 2016).  The following are methods of prevention:

Primary- Screen for signs of depression and emotional distress

Secondary- Provide referral for treatment and outpatient counseling

Tertiary- Baker Act with inpatient treatment and outpatient follow up

The best intervention a nurse can take to help an at risk teen is to talk to them open and honestly and allow them to share their feelings. You should not be afraid to use the word “suicide” (Mayo Clinic, 2016).  The nurse should also try to get the teen to open up about any problems that could be causing the teen to feel depressed or suicidal.  The teens primary physician can also be helpful in managing care.
