Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental illness that involves instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavior. (Psychology Today, 2018) Having unstable behaviors, cause family problems, issues at work, and causes a person to lose their own sense of identity.People with BPD suffer from problems with regulating their emotions. This disorder affects two percent of adults and is more regularly found in women. There is no known cause for BPD, however, psychologists believe that environmental and genetic factors play a huge part in the development of this disorder. Studies show that many people with BPD have a history of abuse, neglect, or separation as a young child. (Psychology Today, 2018).
In the case of the BPD patients at the mental health center, one of the best forms of therapy to use to address the increase in self-mutilating issues is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a therapy designed to help people change patterns of behavior that are not helpful, such as self-harm, suicidal thinking, and substance abuse. (Wikipedia.org). This therapy helps people who are prone to reacting in more intense and out of the ordinary manner when certain situations arise. Most of the situations involve emotional ties, such as romantic issues and family and friend relationship issues.
People with BPD have sudden changes in emotions and often jump from one crisis to another. They see the world in black and white. Because of the quick, unanticipated mood swings, many BPD patients struggle with ways to cope with their emotional rollercoaster lives.Dialectical Behavior Therapy provides a way of teaching skills that will help BPD patients cope with their emotional drama. DBT uses group work (skill training), individual therapy, and self-monitoring to help change target behaviors.
There are four critical skills patients learn while in Dialectical Behavior Therapy. They are Distress Tolerance, Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. (Psychology Today, 2018).Distress Tolerance helps patients learn how to cope with painful events that may have occurred in their childhood, family, or other relationships. Patients learn how to tolerate and surviving crisis situations. Mindfulness teaches the patient to experience the present moment. To live in the present and leave those hard times behind. Mindfulness teaches patients to be happy with themselves as they are now. Emotion Regulation helps patients recognize their feelings both good or bad and develop ways to deal with them. The last skill of Dialectical Behavior Therapy is Interpersonal Effectiveness. This skill helps patients learn what their limits are and develop skills to negotiate solutions to problems. They learn to be problem solvers. There is self-reflection and sharing in DBT group therapy sessions. Daily experiences of patients guide a lot of the DBT group therapy sessions. (MUSE, 2018). The sessions are centered around the needs of the group at that time. Whatever those issues are they are discussed at therapy, giving patients a chance to process through those life changing experiences. (MUSE, 2018)
In the case of the BPD patients, Dialectical Behavior Therapy would benefit them in many ways.BPD patients would learn skills to help them identify what is the real cause for their need to get attention by self-mutilating themselves. They would then learn skills to help them confront those issues and develop strategies to move on with their lives taking time to see the good qualities that they have. This therapy will help patients learn ways to deal with their ever-changing emotions which cause them to seek attention in negative harmful ways. DBT is the behavioral therapy that I would recommend for the BPD patients of the mental health center.
