Imagine that your state is planning to open a public health clinic to provide ease of access to health care to an underserved population. The goal is to provide health care education and proactive medical intervention to those who receive government-sponsored health plans or those who remain uninsured. To determine if the program is well suited for your state and determine which location within your state would benefit from these services, you will first need to gather information. 

Technology can be used to locate subsets of the market. The text provides some good examples about the most frequently used websites and search engines. Another wonderful tool is the U.S. Census Bureau.

  • Download and save a data set of population statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau
    • Go to the U.S. Census Bureau website
    • Click on Data in the top menu bar
    • From Data Tools and Apps, select Quick Facts
    • Choose your state from the menu and click on the Go button
    • Choose a city from the menu and click on the Go button
    • Scroll to the bottom of the data set and click on the Download these tables – Excel link
    • Save the downloaded Excel document or copy and paste the information into a Word document and then save
  • Analyze the information in your data set. Based on what you have learned about the population statistics, do you believe this program would have enough volume to meet its goals, or would another city in the state offer a better location?
  • Attach the document with your data set to your post
