Scenario:

Jessie is a 7th grade student with autism and a student in your class. When a student in the hallway touches Jessie, he jumps straight up in the air two or three feet. Jessie then falls hard to the floor of the hallway without putting his hands out to brace his fall. After he falls, Jessie screams at the top of his lungs. These outbursts often last 20-30 minutes and happen EVERY time Jessie is accidentally touched, bumped, or brushed by someone. Jessie also repeatedly hits and scratches himself in the same area where he is touched, often drawing blood.

Jessie’s parents want him attending the local middle school so he can learn appropriate social skills. Jessie is academically on a second grade level and has no communicative language skills. Jessie’s older sister also attends the same middle school and their parents expect his sister to watch over her brother. She is called out of class, often, which is disruptive to her own education.

Lately, teachers have been complaining about the noise levels caused by Jessie’s disruptions. There are also some students who go out of their way to make sure they touch Jessie because they think his outbursts are funny.

As a member of Jessie’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) team, what suggestions would you have? Draw from the Individual’s with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA) and the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), knowing you are not alone in addressing this situation.
