Here are this week’s discussion questions, related to Tuesday and Thursday’s assigned readings, Chapter one and four of Exploring the Gene Myth. You may answer one, or both of them. Remember to adhere to the discussion board posting guidelines in order to receive full credit for your posts. If you need a refresher, you may find it in “Discussion question guidelines” under Course Documents. 

You have until next Sunday, March 1^st midnight to complete your answers.

1.)   Chapter four of Exploding the Gene Myth discusses how genetic research has typically focused on differences among people, rather than similarities. How do you think genetic research might be different if the focus on identifying and explaining differences was removed? What broader effects would that have on society? 

2.)   In your discussion questions, many of you identified sexist and racist ideologies as a factor in shaping the way scientists do sciences. Identify some of the specific assumptions about race and gender underlying genetic researches. What does it mean to “naturalize” differences? Why does it matter to people whether or not there is an “innate” code responsible for the differences? (Hint: think of the common claims about “gender differences” and “racial differences.” What do those claims do in response to gender and racial inequalities?)
